Poland is a large and diverse country with charming and energetic cities, picturesque mountains, peaceful lakes and rivers, endless forests and a deep and complex history and culture derived from centuries of trade and conflict. Poland was established in 966 AD when the region converted to Christianity. Since then its boundaries, size, location and even its existence have altered frequently. One of the major sights is the historic capital city of Krakow, with its majestic Gothic churches, bustling squares and magnificent castle. From here runs a series of ancient castles and forts along the southern border. In the north, Gdansk offers a charming city centre and golden, sandy beaches, perfect for summer. The modern capital Warsaw has been spectacularly restored after the war and offers, like the rest of the country, plenty of cafes and restaurants with hearty food, refreshing beers and excellent vodkas.
